Notes on Cities in APA Reference Lists

When citing the place of publication in APA references, you should give both the city and state (or providence for Canada and Australia) unless the city is well-known.  Use the postal state abbreviations (two capital letters, no periods.)  For cities outside the United States, Canada, and Australia, give the city and country.

For books published at universities that have the state's name in the university's title you do not need to include the state in the publisher's location.

The following cities do not need a state abbreviation or country:

Cities that can be listed without states or countries in APA references
Baltimore Amsterdam
Boston Jerusalem
Chicago London
Los Angeles Milan
New York Moscow
Philadelphia Paris
San Francisco Rome
  Stockholm
  Tokyo
  Vienna
