Council of Science Editors Style - IntroductionThis section of the Online Citation Guide deals with citing information in the Council of Science Editors (CSE) Style. The CSE style was formally know as the Council of Biology Editors (CBE). The CSE style has two variations: the Citation-Sequence system and the Name-Year system. This site will focus on the Name-Year system, because it is generally preferred over the Citation-Sequence system. The CSE citation style has two parts: in-text citation and a reference list. The in-text citation includes signal phrases and parenthetical citation. It connects the information in the text with a source listed on the reference list. The references list is included as a separate page at the end of the document. The title "References" or "Cited References" (in plain text, not italicized, underlined, in quotes, or otherwise enhanced) is placed at the top of the page. A blank space is given, followed by each of the list entries. The CSE prefers a flush-left style, instead of a hanging-indent or first-line indent. Entries are listed in alphabetical order by the last name of the author, editor, or other individual who is listed first. For that reason, this name is reversed. References that are not specifically cited in the text should be placed under a separate heading: "Additional References." Other resources should be cited under a heading such as "Additional Reading" or "Bibliography." The title is centered on the page. This site includes the following pages:
