Notes on Abbreviation of Months in MLA Style

Abbreviate months for periodicals and web pages as follows:

Month

Abbreviation

January Jan.
February Feb.
March Mar.
April Apr.
May May
June June
July July
August Aug.
September Sept.
October Oct.
November Nov.
December Dec.

All dates in MLA take the format of date month year.  The date is written using one or two digits, the month is written according to the chart above, and the year is written using four digits.  Examples include:

  • 4 July 2000

  • 17 Oct. 1997

  • 27 Aug. 1997
